RESULTS

In the period 2021-2025 were defended a number of 119 doctoral theses.
All of them were validated by CNATDCU; a procent of 42% received the qualification Excellent, 27.7% received the qualification Very good, and the qualifications of Good and Satisfactory were awarded to a procent of 20.2% and, respectively 10.1% of the defended theses, according to the recommandations of the Physics Committee of CNATDCU for awarding qualifications to doctoral theses.

In the period 2016-2020 were defended a number of 134 doctoral theses.
All of them were validated by CNATDCU; a procent of 44% received the qualification Excellent, 32.1% received the qualification Very good, and the qualifications of Good and Satisfactory were awarded to a procent of 19.4% and, respectively 4.5% of the defended theses, according to the recommandations of the Physics Committee of CNATDCU for awarding qualifications to doctoral theses.

Outstanding achievements of our doctoral students obtained during the doctoral stage

• winning of the first prize at ”Open Problems Competition” NANOSUM 2024, Blaubeuren, Germania, by the doctoral student Adina-Diana DOBRIN during the CIVIS mobility in the period 17.06.2024–21.06.2024
• winning by the doctoral student Maria Işfan of the second prize at the Bucharest edition, respectively of a special prize at the national edition of the competion Games of Science 2024, part of the project „Science for all” of the CIVIS Open Lab UB program
• awarding of the Fellowship of SPIE (the international society for optics and photonics) in 2019 to the doctoral student Simon Agota, who was the Team Leader of the project HyperMed "Spin Your Thesis!" 2015 of the European Spatial Agency ESA, having thus the opportunity to perform experiments in conditions of hipergravity in ESA labs
• awarding of the "Radu Grigorovici" Prize of the Romanian Academy on 2016 to the doctoral student Bogdan Ostahie for the group of works: Super-radiative effect in the bidimensional phosphorene network in perpendicular magnetic field
• awarding of the "Constantin Miculescu" Prize of the Romanian Academy on 2016 to the doctoral student Elena Florinela Manea, together with the doctoral supervisoe Mircea Radulian, for the work: Improving the shear wave velocity structure beneath Bucharest (Romania) using ambient vibrations
• awarding of the "Ştefan Procopiu" Prize of the Romanian Academy on 2016 to the doctoral student Liviu Cristian Tănase for the group of works: Charge transfer at interface correlated with the electronic structure, ferroic ordering and chemical or catalytical activity, characterized by surface science techniques
• awarding of the Ad Astra Prize "Excellence in doctoral research in Romania - Earth Science and Space Science" on 2016 to the doctoral student Nicuşor Arsene
• awarding of the "Radu Grigorovici" Prize of the Romanian Academy on 2015 to the doctoral students Raluca Negrea and Georgia Boni, together with Cristina Chirilă, for the work: Structural properties in epitaxial oxidic layers, nanostructures and nanocomposites

Prizes of the Senate of the University of Bucharest (UB) awarded to our doctoral students and research groups

• 2024: awarding of the prize for „The best doctoral thesis” defended in the previous academic year in UB in the domain Exact Sciences and Engineering to the doctoral student Petrișor-Gabriel Bleotu, together with his supervisors C.Ş. I dr. Daniel Ursescu, UB, and dr. Julien Fuchs, Institut Polytechnique de Paris (teză în cotutelă)
• 2023: awarding of the prize for „The most prestigious article” published in the previous academic year in the domain Exact Sciences and Engineering to the contributing doctoral students Nicolae Filipoiu and Amanda Teodora Preda
• 2022: awarding of the prize for „The best doctoral thesis” defended in the previous academic year in UB in the domain Exact Sciences and Engineering to the doctoral student Mihaela Pârvu, together with her supervisor prof.univ.dr. Ionel Lazanu
• 2018: awarding of the prize for„The best doctoral thesis” defended in the previous academic year in UB in the domain Exact Sciences and Engineering to the doctoral student Mihai Boni, together with his supervisor C.Ş. I dr. Mihail Lucian Pascu
• 2018: awarding of the prize for "The research group with the highest scientific contribution with impact in society" in the domain Exact Sciences and Engineering to the Research Center 3Nano-SAE of the Physics Faculty, coordinated by prof.univ.dr. Ioan Stamatin, which involves a significat number of doctoral students

"Following the Bologna Declaration, starting with 2005 the Physics Doctoral Studies programme at University of Bucharest is organized in the framework of the Physics Doctoral School. With about 70 PhD supervisors and more than 40 PhD students enrolled each year, the Physics Doctoral School is one of the biggest in the University of Bucharest, offering a high quality human expertise and research infrastructure for each of the seven directions of studies in which it is organized. A specific feature of our doctoral school is the “Educational Physics” direction, where research in both fields, Physics and Education Science is pursued. The group target for this direction are our colleagues, high-school and secondary-school Physics teachers. In the last ten years, few of them finished successfuly their PhD thesis, obtaining the title of PhD in Physics. We are very proud that this strategy, considered as “an example of good practice” at European level, leads to a stronger and fruitful collaboration between the colleagues from higher education and secondary and high schools, in the benefit of Physics education at national and international level."

"In our Doctoral School, there is a real partnership between doctoral supervisors and PhD students, the supervisors sharing with PhD students not only their experience, but also their expertise. Thus, the student can start working in the research field of his/her choice shortly after being admitted as PhD student. The supervisors assist the students to become independent scholars, and finally good researchers, by guiding and facilitating their research and publishing careers and by motivating them to participate at national and international conferences and seminars, where they can disseminate the original results related to their PhD thesis. In the Doctoral School in Physics, every PhD student is encouraged to publish as many as possible scientific papers in peer-review journals prior to defending the thesis, since such publications are a proof of a valuable and scientifically correct research activity. The main goal of PhD supervisors is to form researchers who can use methodological and operational tools in their chosen research field."
